Gun violence is on the rise in Harlem. In
2006, 41 people were killed in the three police precincts that cover this
section of New York City, a shocking statistic that is more than double the
19 killed there in 2005. After their own children were senselessly
murdered by guns, two women decided to channel their anger and hurt into
a constructive purpose.
In November of 2006, Jean Corbett-Parker and Jackie Rowe-Adams
formed a not-for-profit organization called Harlem Mothers
Stop Another Violent End (S.A.V.E.).
These women are dedicated to doing whatever is necessary
to prevent another mother from experiencing the all-consuming grief that
comes with the loss of a child. If they can prevent young people from
illegally buying and then using guns to act tough, or to resolve a conflict,
the mission of Harlem Mothers S.A.V.E. will have been achieved.
